Indiana Avenue

The history of this area west of downtown is based in the African-America culture. This was where many immigrants chose to settle in Indianapolis based on the close proximity of industry including the railroad, wholesale businesses and others. The African-American immigrants were outnumbered by the number of German and Irish people that came seeking the American dream. In the late 1800’s, people seeking freedom and freedom from persecution, sought and found their dream in the area of Indiana Avenue, Indianapolis. Skilled immigrants were able to put their talents to work and achieve a place to pursue happiness. Today the Indiana Avenue Redevelopment Project seeks to revitalize this area full of history and African American culture. Entrepreneurial and public art projects are encouraged.
